THE SCAR SHE COULDN’T HIDE

The food container hit the concrete before she could react.
Plastic cracked against the ground, and the meal scattered across the recreation yard.
The quiet new inmate stood frozen.
She slowly looked down at the mess.
Then back at the woman standing in front of her.
    The lead bully smiled.
    “Pick it up.”
    The newcomer said nothing.
A cup appeared in the bully’s hand.
Before the newcomer could move, water splashed across her face.
She gasped and closed her eyes.
    The bully slapped her once.
A sharp sound cut through the yard.
The two women behind her laughed.
“Pick it up,” the bully repeated.
The newcomer wiped water from her cheek.
    She bent down.
One follower kicked the empty container away.
It scraped across the concrete and disappeared beneath a table.
The other shoved a bench backward, blocking the only clear path.
    The bully stepped closer.
    “You move when I say.”
She slammed her palm against the table.
    Nobody spoke.
    Nobody intervened.
The newcomer looked toward the container.
Then something slipped from her chest pocket.
    A tiny folded paper flower.
    It landed beside her shoe.
    The bully noticed it first.
She bent down and picked it up.
    The newcomer immediately straightened.
    “Give that back.”
    The bully unfolded the flower.
Inside was a tiny handwritten message.
    For Mom.
    The bully laughed.
    “Aww.”
Then she crushed it inside her fist.
The paper made a soft, painful crumpling sound.
She dropped the ruined flower into a puddle.
Then pressed it flat beneath the bottom of the plastic cup.
    The newcomer froze.
    Her breathing changed.
As she moved her arm, the sleeve of her orange jumpsuit shifted slightly.
An old circular scar became visible near her forearm.
Across the yard, an older inmate stopped moving.
Her eyes locked onto the scar.
    Everything changed.
    The conversations disappeared.
    The older woman slowly stood.
Her bench scraped loudly against the concrete.
    The newcomer looked toward her.
The older inmate stared at the scar.
Recognition passed between them without a word.
The newcomer wiped the last water from her face.
    Her shoulders relaxed.
    Then a faint smile appeared.
    The bully frowned.
    “What?”
The newcomer looked directly at her.
    Her voice was calm.
“Ask her why she remembers this scar.”
    The bully slowly turned.
The older inmate took one step forward.
    “She pulled me out.”
    The followers immediately backed away.
The bully looked at the scar.
    Then the crushed paper flower.
Then the woman she had just humiliated.
    Her confidence disappeared.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
