American Pie 5: Cast Remains Hopeful Despite Negotiation Setbacks

Thomas Ian Nicholas and Tara Reid are keeping the hope alive for a fifth American Pie movie, even though negotiations for the sequel have stalled.

The actors, along with co-stars Chris Klein and Eddie Kaye Thomas, recently reunited at a panel during the Nov. 1 Rhode Island Comic Con, moderated by PEOPLE’s Dory Jackson. The discussion covered their memories of the iconic 1999 teen comedy, with Jackson asking if they’d be interested in another sequel to follow 2001’s American Pie 2, 2003’s American Wedding, and 2012’s American Reunion.

Nicholas, 44, shared behind-the-scenes details about the proposed fifth installment. He revealed that during the summer of 2021, while attending the New York City premiere of Old (a film featuring his son, Nolan River), he spoke with Universal Pictures president Peter Cramer. Cramer mentioned that negotiations for American Pie 5 were underway, which excited Nicholas.

“I was like, ‘Sweet, this is happening,’” he recalled.

However, six months later, Nicholas reached out to the franchise’s screenwriter Adam Herz for an update. Herz’s response was disappointing: “We didn’t come to terms on negotiation.”

Despite the setback, Nicholas remains optimistic. “The fact that another sequel was even discussed tells me there’s interest,” he noted. He also speculated that the resurgence of late-’90s nostalgia, spurred by projects like the upcoming Happy Gilmore sequel, could reignite interest in American Pie.

Co-star Eddie Kaye Thomas chimed in, reflecting on the challenges of adapting American Pie to modern times. “You cannot make that movie now for so many reasons,” he said, highlighting the cultural shifts since the original film’s release.

Tara Reid, however, hinted at potential twists in the new script, teasing, “It’s really funny. It could work.”

Meanwhile, Chris Klein humorously admitted he’s out of the loop: “I’m always the last to know.”

For now, fans of American Pie will have to wait and see if the franchise’s next chapter comes to fruition, but the cast’s enthusiasm keeps the possibility alive.
