RCA Rolls-Royce Collaboration: Unveiling Visionary Vehicle Concepts

The Royal College of Art recently played host to its annual Interim Degree Show, an event that provided a platform for students in the MA Vehicle Design program to showcase their innovative projects. Among the highlights of the show was a collaborative effort between second-year students and Rolls-Royce, resulting in a collection of visionary vehicle concepts that pushed the boundaries of luxury and design.

A Vision of Future Luxury: The students’ task was to delve into the essence of the Rolls-Royce brand, discern its unique customer appeal, and craft formal yet elegant design statements for a new era. With a deep appreciation for Rolls-Royce’s rich history of blending coach-built body design with traditional interior craftsmanship and a touch of modernity, the challenge was to envision a vehicle that met the demands of Rolls-Royce’s discerning clientele while anticipating future user scenarios for a vehicle set to join the marque’s 2020 portfolio.

Above Rubies by Jan P Rosenthal: Jan P Rosenthal’s “Above Rubies” concept reimagines the Rolls-Royce experience as a blend of a two-seater coupe and an SUV, designed to conquer the desert landscape. With a modern interpretation of the iconic Phantom front-end, the vehicle boasts elegant proportions, measuring 5770mm in length and 1694mm in height, providing higher ground clearance reminiscent of a Range Rover. The dynamic design features sharp highlights on the bodyside, giving it an agile appearance while retaining the monumental Rolls-Royce presence. The rear end treatment draws inspiration from the Bentley GT, emphasizing safety.

Shooting Brake by Niels van Roij: Niels van Roij’s visionary creation drew inspiration from architectural deconstructivism to fashion a two-seater vehicle with rear accommodations suitable for pets. The design draws from Rolls-Royce’s historic shooting brakes, evolving the marque’s signature two-tone character. A drop-down tailgate offers easy access for four-legged companions, while the interior showcases 3D component themes and materials like tweed, reflecting both durability and uniqueness.

Silver Wraith by Paul Nichols: Paul Nichols’ Silver Wraith concept reflects on the meaning of luxury in the wake of an economic crisis. His creation features a unique 1+2 layout, resembling a modern-day rickshaw, and rides on a slightly shortened wheelbase compared to the Ghost. The vehicle’s sculptural hood is a striking focal point, separating and cutting through the body, leading to a graphical breakup in its exterior design. Nichols’ concept resonates with both the West and emerging markets, with a romantic interior layout and exterior proportions designed to convey a strong presence.

These visionary concepts challenge conventional notions of luxury and design, presenting fresh perspectives on what a Rolls-Royce could be in the future. While they may exist in the realm of imagination for now, they serve as a testament to the boundless creativity and innovation that define the world of automotive design.
